2:2- Stigmatizing and Ignorance!

Watch this video – it is amazing. Then ponder our work around the vocabulary words stigma and ignorance. What are some examples this artist uses of how the gay community is both viewed through an ignorant view point – how are they stigmatized?

REMEMBER TO ENGAGE WITH ONE ANOTHER!

i think its really sad that people are so ignorant and stigmatized by same sex relationships. if people are happy then just leave them alone, you dont have to completley agree with it but people that go out of their way to let someone who is gay know they dont like them is so stupid. in this video the couple that bangs into the gay couple on the street is an example of them being ignorant towards gays because they have a lack of knowledg on how this would effect them and they dont realise that this couple are happy together.

The first time i watched this video it literally brought tears to my eyes, it speaks to me in so many ways and its amazing that such a famous artist would actually used thier fame to speak about issues like this, and not be worried about what fans they may be losing in doing so. I’ve grown up in a catholic household my whole life and im glad he brought light to the religion aspect of the “same love” controversy. Growing up it was always so frusterating to me that so many people who practiced the same faith as me, and claimed to be tolerant; remained ignorant to the concept of homosexuality. I strayed from my beliefs and away from god for this very reason, not because im gay, but because how could I follow a religion who seemed to fail to recognize people who were. Only recently have I thought to look into it myself, and I came to the same conclusion mackelmore did.

No where in the bases of christian religion does it say that it is not okay to like a person of the same sex and people who claim to be christian yet fail to accept that are the “sinners” in my eyes. I know what im saying may be controversial, but im a strong beliver in the right to same love, and im also catholic. When the mother in this video came to the same conclusion i did, it warmed my heart. In the modern world we have the knowledge and resources to educate ourselves so i hope more people chose to do so. Im not angry at the people who chose to remain uninformed, but i hope in the near future society is a place where everyone can live equally wihtout the stereotypes and stigma revolving around not only gay people, but religion as well. We all have the right to a choice and i support same sex marriage with open arms.

According to politics and religion we live in a world of equality, this is not equality. Equality is where no matter what we are all treated the same whether we are black, gay, asian, or lesbian. “A culture founded by oppression” this line really stuck out to me because even though we live in a democracy thats only politically. Society forces the “proper ways to live” on us when really they are all wrong. Macklemore really highlighted how stereotype we are towards homosexuals. There is nothing wong with wanting to be different. We are all so ignorant towards loving the same sex. “Whatever God we came from, we came from the same one.’ There is so much stigma towards gays. Nowadays if somones gay we act as if its infectious. Why can’t we just leave each other be to be whoever we want to be?. Does your preference in sex really matter? Mayebe we all need to stop trying to fit in and be perfect, instead we need to see what counts in life. Love is a beautiful thing between two people. Anyone who isn’t one of those to have no right to butt into their buisness.

i do really agree with all three of the other posts, people cant get that “perfect” image out of there head with the cute boy and girl couple that everyone frolics over because they want a relationship just like that, but really what is the different with a girl and girl and boy and boy yeah sure its more common to see a girl and boy but why does it matter if there the same sex they still do the same things and want the same happy ending they go for dates and want to get married and have kids. get the perfect picture out of your head because garantee that relationships that you are looking down are really arent as bad as you think they are the girls that go out to find themselves the perfect boy with a cute smile and the perfect body well guess what that doesnt work for all of us so move on and stop picking on people that are just trying to enjoy there life. i find it really discouraging in the video when he brings his boyfriend over and his parents get up and walk away, its interesting to think that we cant just dis society for stigmatizing and ignorance when really we just need to look at the families, your parents are suppose to love you no matter what, and when they stigmatize you for being different and be ignorant like this family, they dont even give it a chance, i dont see how we can expect society to accept the difference when ever our parents are shutting us down. this video is really sad but inspiring to all the people of the gay community that is strong enough to block out what people say and be able to still be happy.

I agree with Olvia’s comment about the straight couple deliberatly bumping into the gay couple, that was extremley rude and tottaly ignorant of them. Everyone deserve’s to have a happy realationship whether your straight gay or lesbian. I love the way Macklemore mentions the fact that were basing our daily existence on a book written 3500 years ago. Yes I’m Christian but it doesn’t strictly say anything about sexualy straight people being the only type of people to lead a stigmatized ‘healthy’ relationship. I’m glad the mother realizes in the end that this is who her son is and will always be and she accepts it with open arms. I think society needs to gradually learn how to open up to different thing, especially when those things don’t necisarrily affect us in a negative way.
